SUTURE FOLK FESTIVAL 2023 - LINE UP

see english below

This year's small festival in Soven will be all about songwriters and songwriting. Six musicians from three countries will gather in the village of Soven for a week and work together and individually on new songs. The environment of the `Wendland´ - the landscape, the architecture, the sounds, the animals - will be the musicians' inspiration for their work. On Friday 18.8. and Saturday 19.8. in the evening the singer-songwriters will present their programs as part of the `Suture Folk Festival´ in the old barn of the beautiful farm in Soven, near Dannenberg. The audience is thus given the opportunity to first get to know all the musicians and their work individually. The highlight of the small festival will be a final moderated set on Saturday evening in which all musicians will present their newly created `Soven Songs´ together. Besides the British songwriter Paul Armfield and the Italian singer-songwriter Giulio Cantore, the siblings Max & Laura Braun and the Berlin based musicians Carolina Lee and Judith Ahrends will perform.

PAUL ARMFIELD (UK)

With seven albums worth of literary lovelorn songs under his belt, Paul Armfield returns to the stage to deliver an intimate rendition of some of his favorites. With just a guitar, a saw, and a voice that could melt even the hardest of hearts, Paul is the songwriter’s songwriter, his work admired by the likes of Guy Garvey (Elbow) and Chris Difford (Squeeze). His last album ‚Domestic‘ though written before Brexit and before covid contains songs that now sound eerily prescient, exploring notions of home, of isolation, nationalism and immigration.

Paul Armfield´s performance at Suture Folk Festival will be Saturday the 19th of August 9:00 pm.
JUDITH AHRENDS (Berlin)

Judith Ahrends from Berlin creates open and almost naïve songs, in the in between of downtempo and pop. She sings, plays synthesizer, and makes beats. With her current project, she returns to her roots in jazz and folk.

Judith Ahrends is going to perform her solo set on the 19th of August 7pm at Suture Folk Festival.

GIULIO CANTORE (Italy)

Giulio Cantore

Giulio Cantore continues the lineage of great Italian serenata singer/songwriters, but Giulio also spent much of his youth immersed in flamenco. His light and lyrical style has shades of both, a warm and loveable presence with surprising flashes of virtuosic guitar brilliance. He is considered one of the most interesting and original songwriters of the italian alternative music scene.

Giulio Cantores performance at Suture Folk Festival will be friday the 18th of August 8:30 pm.

MAX & LAURA BRAUN (Berlin)

Minimalistische Gitarrenpatterns tragen Lauras weiche Stimme. Max singt zweite Stimmen.

There's a clear chemistry, a sense of trust between Max and Laura Braun. A brother-sister duo who split their time between London and Germany, their stark, imposing folk sounds have a sharp, noir feel. Delicately etched, there's an under-stated nature to the group's output, an almost casual defiance of convention Clash Magazine

Max & Laura’s performance at Suture Folk Festival will be Saturday the 19th of August 8pm.
CAROLINA LEE SOLO (Berlin)

(Aachener Zeitung).

Carolina Lees Solo Auftritt beim Suture Folk Festival ist am Freitag, den 18. August um 19:30 Uhr.

Carolina Lee's slow and dusky Dream Pop vocalizes stories and reveries over a subtle and thought-out musical arrangement. The songs draw the audience down into the deep end - to be carried by a sound that corresponds with the past and is still completely at ease in a melancholy and playful present. A tension is created that is sometimes reminiscent of the dark timbre of Karen Dalton or the dreamy simplicity of Mazzy Star.

Carolina Lees performance at Suture Folk Festival will be Friday the 18th of August 7:30 pm.
MAX BRAUN (Berlin)

Galant." (Märkischer Allgemeine)

Max Brauns Performance beim Suture Folk Festival ist am Freitag, den 18. August um 21:30 Uhr.

”Till Morning Comes” is the first solo album of composer/songwriter/producer Max Braun. Through tales of drifting in and out of sleep the song cycle deals with subjects such as trust, loneliness and hope. Rooted in the singer/songwriter tradition the music carries varied musical influences ranging from British Folk to early minimalist electronic music and cosmic, meditative Jazz.

Max Brauns performance at Suture Folk Festival will be Friday the 18th of August 9:30 pm.

Suture Festival is continuing its broad programming, this year more boldly and strikingly than in the past two editions. The festival’s invitations stretch eclectically from punk-driven improvisers (Terrie Ex and Andy Moor), European jazz master (Tobias Delius), hypnotic trio Lotto (at the interface of minimalism, improvised rock and new classical music), to experimental prepared hurdy-gurdy instrumentalist (Samo Kutin) and performer of contemporary music for traditional Japanese instrument shō (Naomi Sato). To electrify the atmosphere, Suture Festival has invited Grup Şimşek, a trans-continental pop band injecting the funky folk sound of 70's Anatolian music with a sci-fi touch, the visionary Argentinian artist, painter and singer Pictorial Candi, visual and sound artist Viola Yip, who will perform a site-specific performance in the festival’s barn, and Berlin-based Jasmine Guffond, an electronic artist working at the interface of social, political and technical infrastructures.

Her practice spans solo live performance, recording, sound installation and a custom-made browser add-on. Interested in providing an audible presence for phenomena that usually lie beyond human perception, Jasmine Guffond’s work questions contemporary surveillance technologies via the sonification of facial recognition algorithms or internet tracking cookies.

KAJA DRAKSLER & TOBIAS DELIUS
(Copenhagen/Trboje/Berlin)

Apart from their age difference, Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler and Germany’s own saxophonist/clarinetist Tobias Delius have much in common. They both lived in Amsterdam for about a decade (although at different periods), and being part of the very vibrant impro scene, they have both been involved with the Doek collective and both have a background in jazz. Curating Suture Festival for the third time, Kaja Draksler is at home in Soven. In their first performance as a duo, they will be playing some of their most beloved jazz songs from master composers such as T.Monk, H.Nichols and M.Mengelberg.

Samo Kutin is an instrumentalist and teacher, known for his use of unconventional and self-made musical instruments as well as sound-making objects. One of the traditional instruments of his repertoire is the unusual Hungarian instrument called hurdy gurdy which is amplified with both contact microphones and acoustic resonators. Besides organizing workshops for children and adults and, writing music for theater performances and storytellers, he is a member of various formations. Samo Kutin will present a range of different acoustic dimensions, from gentle noise to noisy drones, from soft blows to unbearable whimpers; a piece that summons obscure sounds and original melodies.
